A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. What is Geographical Indication (GI)

Geographical Indications (GI) refer to a designation assigned to a specific product originating from a particular geographical area, possessing unique qualities, reputation, or characteristics attributable to that place of origin. The GI system came into effect on September 15, 2003. Darjeeling Tea holds the distinction of being the first Indian product to receive a GI tag. GI Tags play a vital role in intellectual property rights (IPRs), providing legal protection to products based on their geographical attributes. They ensure that GI-tagged products are not unlawfully used by others, granting them exclusive rights.
