Sunnah acts of Eid ul Fitr

After a long month of fasting, Eid-ul-Fitr is a special day of joy for us from Allah. It is a reward for us from Allah, given to us for obeying Him. Through this joy we should expect to be freed from the sins of our past lives. It is a Sunnah to be happy and cheerful on the day of Eid. Celebrating on this day and making others happy is part of worship. Let us briefly know some of the Sunnah of the day of Eid, which will help us turn this day into worship.

Some practices of the day of Eid-ul-Fitr

  • Tashreek in Takbeer
  • Paying Fitra before the Eid prayer
  • Waking up early in the morning and going to the Eidgah first
  • Miswak, bath and perfume
  • Eating an odd number of dates or sweets and going to the Eidgah
  • Going to Eidgah on foot without using vehicles
  • Changing the way to and from the Eidgah
  • Performing Eid prayer in the open
  • Hearing the sermon (Wajib)
  • On the day of Eid, smile and be happy as much as possible
  • Greeting each other on Eid

Tashreek in Takbeer

It is mustahab to give takbeer from the evening after the sighting of the Eid moon until the next day before the Eid prayer. The month of Shawwal begins with the last Iftar of Ramadan. Since then I will give more takbeer. Even when going to perform the Eid prayer at the Eidgah, men will give takbeer in a loud voice. I will keep reciting takbeer till Imam sahib arrives at the Eidgah. Tashreek in Takbeer is:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَاَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْد

Meaning: God is great, God is great. There is no true god but Allah. God is great, God is great. All praise is due to Allah.

Paying Fitra before the Eid prayer

Sadaqatul Fitr has to be paid before the Eid prayer. So that the poor people do not touch others on the day of Eid. Thinking about them, it is better to pay Sadaqatul Fitr 2-3 days before the day of Eid. So that they can ensure its good use. So that they can prepare for the day of Eid 2-1 in advance. Giving Fitra 2-1 days before Eid is proven by the deeds of the Companions. Therefore giving Fitra before Eid Salat does not mean that it should be given immediately before Salat. Rather, it is the limit. According to Hanafi fiqh, performing Fitra after the Eid prayer will be performed, but it is improper. Like the Imams of other Madhhabs, it is also found that giving Fitra after the Eid prayer does not constitute Fitra. Rather it will be treated as a general donation. There are many who distribute 5-10 taka from the Fitra taka to those who come to the Eidgah after the Eid prayer. It should not be done. At this time I will do normal sadaka or donation. But I will deliver Fitra money or food items 2-1 days before Eid.

Waking up early in the morning and going to the Eidgah first

It is Sunnah to wake up early on the day of Eid and get ready to go to the Eidgah and arrive at the Eidgah earlier.

Miswak, bath and perfume

It is Sunnah to perform miswak, bath and use perfume on the day of Eid. If there is an opportunity for women to go to the Eidgah, women will not go to the Eidgah wearing perfume under any circumstances. Because the Prophet (PBUH) directly forbade women to go out using perfume under all circumstances.

Eating an odd number of dates or sweets and going to the Eidgah

Before going to the Eidgah, the Prophet (PBUH) used to eat an odd number of dates. So before going to the Eidgah, we will eat dates or sweets and head towards the Eidgah, Inshallah.

Going to Eidgah on foot without using vehicles

It is Sunnah to go to the Eidgah on foot without using a vehicle. But if there is an illness or some other problem, that is a different matter.

Changing the way to and from the Eidgah

It is Sunnah to take a different route to the Eidgah while returning home. If there is no alternative road then I will return on the opposite side of the road from which I am going. Even then, InshAllah, this Sunnah will be fulfilled. Different from coming and going, I will try to exchange Eid greetings or at least exchange greetings with as many people as I meet on this way. I will try to give charity to all the poor people I meet.

Performing Eid prayer in the open

It is Sunnah to perform the Eid prayer in an open place rather than in a closed place or inside a mosque. But if there is no such opportunity then it can be done in the mosque.

Hearing the sermon (Wajib)

The khutbah of Friday prayer is given before the prayer and the khutbah of Eid prayer is given after the prayer. It is wajib for the worshipers to listen to the sermon in silence. It is often seen that during the khutba there is a conversation between the two, walking away or collecting money for the mosque. These are very cruel and unjust actions.

On the day of Eid, smile and be happy as much as possible

Eid is a day of happiness given to us by Allah. So being happy and smiling on this day is also an act of worship. Many of us are in a lot of pain and suffering. I will also try to make this day happy and cheerful. May Allah bless us all with peace and joy in this world and the hereafter. amen

Greeting each other on Eid

We will greet each other when we meet or talk to someone on phone/message. Companions (RA) used to exchange greetings by saying a beautiful dua to each other when they met on the day of Eid. That is:

تَقَبَّلَ اللهُ مِنَّا وَمِنكُم

Meaning: May Allah accept (good deeds) from us and from you.

After reciting this sentence a beautiful dua was made and a Sunnah of the Companions (ra) was acted upon. It is also permissible to say the traditional Eid Mubarak without saying it. Its meaning or purpose is “May your Eid be blessed”. So there is no problem in saying Eid Mubarak. Salam should be given before greeting.

Narrated by Hazrat Khalid bin Madan. He said, I met Washila bin Askbah on the day of Eid. Then I said to him: Takabbalallahu minna wa minka. Then he said: Yes, takabbalallahu minna waminka. Washila also said: I once met the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, on the day of Eid. Then I said: Takabbala Allahu minna waminka. Then he also said: Yes, taqabbalallahu minna waminka.

Conclusion

May Allah make our celebration of Eid a means of worship. Protect us from all manifest haram and indecent acts. The purpose of Ramadan was to make us Muttaqwi. May Allah grant us the Tawfiq so that we can live as muttaqvi on the day of Eid and the whole year after. amen
